Phillip Hughes was struck by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match in 2014, suffering a fatal injury that led to his tragic passing two days later at just 25.

On This Day Cricket: One of Australia’s most promising young talents, Phillip Hughes, tragically passed away on this day (November 27) in 2014. Playing against New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield game at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Hughes, who was representing South Australia, was hit by a bouncer on the side of his head, below the helmet, on the first day of the match.
The incident took place when Hughes was batting on 63 with his side placed at two for 136. Hughes was struck when he missed an attempted hook shot. It resulted in a cerebral haemorrhage.

Having been rushed to the hospital from the SCG, Hughes underwent surgery, but he did not regain consciousness.
Two days after being hit on the neck, Hughes died at the age of 25.
Phillip Hughes made his international debut at the age of 20 against South Africa in Johannesburg in February 2009. After being dismissed for a duck in the first innings of that game against the Proteas, Hughes pulled off a fine 75 in the next innings. His brilliant second-innings knock comprised 11 boundaries and a six.
Phillip Hughes continued his brilliance with the bat in the second Test, where he was adjudged Player of the Match. In his second Test appearance, Hughes hit two centuries against South Africa in Durban. In the first innings of that fixture, Hughes had scored 115. In the second innings, he played another marvellous knock and scored 160.
Phillip Hughes went on to represent Australia in 26 Tests. He scored 1535 runs at an average of 32.65 in red-ball cricket. Hughes claimed three centuries and seven half centuries in Test cricket.
In ODIs, Phillip Hughes played for the first time against Sri Lanka in January 2013. The left-hander featured in 25 ODI games and bagged 826 runs at an average of 35.91. He hit two tons and four half centuries in the 50-over format.
Phillip Hughes took part in one T20I match. His lone T20I appearance came against Pakistan in October 2014. He also had an impressive List-A outing with an aggregate of 3639 runs in 89 innings at an average of 47.25, including eight centuries and 23 half centuries.
