Former Swan Joins GIANTS VFL

The GIANTS’ VFL program has added a former Swan to its ranks for 2026.
The GIANTS’ VFL program is delighted to announce the signing of former Swan James Bell for the 2026 Smithy’s VFL season.
Bell, 26, is a tough inside midfielder with 28 games of AFL experience for the Swans between 2018-2022.
Bell joins the GIANTS fresh off a superb three years for Glenelg in the SANFL, helping the Tigers claim back-to-back premierships in 2023 and 2024 before finishing runner-up in 2025.
Also a former Swans Academy product, Bell averaged 18.1 disposals, 5,5 tackles, 4 clearances, and 4.1 inside 50s per game for Glenelg this past season and will be a welcome addition to the GIANTS’ VFL midfield brigade in 2026.
Originally from Shellharbour and a proud Indigenous Australian, Bell was also a star junior soccer player in his teenager years before making the decision to pursue an AFL career which ultimately landed him at the Swans as a Category B Rookie in 2017.
GIANTS Head of Talent Adrian Caruso said it was great to welcome Bell to the club’s VFL side for season 2026.
“It’s great to be adding someone with James’ experience and talent to our program,” Caruso said.
“Not only has he played at the highest level and played almost 30 games of AFL footy, but he’s been part of a really successful program at Glenelg in the SANFL and we’re excited about how he can help our program in 2026.
“He’s tough, powerful, and has a great attack on the footy and he’ll add some real grunt and leadership to our midfield.
“James still has the desire to play at the highest level and training in our AFL program and performing in what we believe will be an exciting and strong VFL team will hopefully help give him that opportunity to try and get back into the AFL system.”
Bell will begin with the club on Monday as an AFL train-on.
