6 things you need to know on Friday, Nov. 28

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – First Alert 6 has the headlines you need to know to get your Friday started.

Snow, ice through weekend in Omaha metro starting Friday

Friday is the first of three First Alert 6 Weather Days put in place by our weather team this weekend.

Senior Chief Meteorologist Rusty Lord says Friday we’ll watch snow move in from the north and pass over our northern counties after 9am then slide into our Iowa counties for the afternoon and evening.

“Overall the amounts should be pretty light with temperatures that stay below freezing,” Rusty says.

Lord says we’ll later see the moisture fill in better and bring the risk of freezing drizzle to the area.

“A light glaze of ice is possible anywhere in the area overnight before we change over to snow entirely by sunrise Saturday,” Rusty says.

Just blocks away, officers report locating multiple bullet casings near the McDonald’s off of 30th and Ames streets.

Investigators were on the scene Thursday night to find out more.

Omaha residents will start having trash picked up again Friday

Garbage wasn’t picked up in Omaha on Thursday due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Public Works Department and its waste contractor, FCC Environmental Services, had the day off for the holiday.

According to a release, collections normally scheduled for Thursdays will be picked up Friday, and Friday’s on Saturday. Carts and yard waste bags are to be put out for collection no later than 6 a.m. on the collection day.

FCC is set to then resume its regularly-scheduled pickup routes Monday. The City of Omaha reminds the public that next week is the final week for free fall yard waste collection.

Anyone with questions can contact the Solid Waste help line at 402-444-5238, the release states.

Gameday travel, shoppers to impact drivers near NE Crossing Friday

A number of stores that were closed on Thanksgiving will reopen early Friday as retailers kick off the holiday shopping season.

Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Macy’s, Target, and Walmart all opened their doors at 6 a.m. Friday, to name a few.

On Friday, NSP will be working to help traffic flow at the I-80 traffic exits to Nebraska Crossing in Gretna.

This traffic restriction may impact fans driving to Lincoln for the Nebraska football game or shoppers headed out to get deals Friday morning.

NDOT Omaha said no left turns or U-turns will be permitted on Highway 6 near Nebraska Crossing from 6-11 a.m. Friday.

Nebraska State Patrol will be operating the signal at the highway intersection to keep traffic moving, NDOT Omaha also told First Alert 6.

Tree lighting ceremony at Omaha’s Durham Museum happening Friday

On Friday, the Christmas season will “officially” begin at Omaha’s Durham Museum.

The public is invited to the kickoff event from 4-8 p.m. Friday with a Christmas tree lighting happening around 7 p.m. According to the Durham’s website, it is the region’s largest indoor Christmas tree — standing at nearly 40 feet tall.

Friday’s event will feature live music, holiday crafts, and an appearance from Santa himself. This year will also mark the 50th Christmas at Union Station, according to a release.

On Nov. 17, the tree in front of a La Vista home was chosen for the display and made its way through the metro. The search for it began back in June.

Nebraska, Iowa to compete in 15th annual Heroes Game Friday

On Friday, Nebraska football will have one more shot at a regular-season win with a Heroes Trophy matchup against Iowa.

The game will be at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln at 11 a.m. Friday. A pregame show will start at 10 a.m. on 10/11.

It will be the 56th installment of the rivalry game, with the Hawkeyes taking nine of the last 10 meetings. The Huskers are looking to mark Matt Rhule’s first win against Iowa since he took over the program.

Iowa will be riding the high of a comeback win over Michigan State in Iowa City, while Nebraska will be fresh off a subpar performance against Penn State on the road.

Ashley De La Cruz-Martin was chosen as Nebraska’s Hero and Jayce Koob was selected as Iowa’s Hero for the game Friday, according to the Huskers website.
