USPS shows off new facility in Scarborough, expects record packages

SCARBOROUGH, Maine (WGME) — The US Postal Service says it expects to process a record number of packages this holiday season.

CBS13 got a tour on Tuesday of the processing facility in Scarborough. It includes new package sorting machines and new facilities.

The postal service says it’s been modernizing and upgrading its network, especially since the number of packages in the mail has gone up over the years with online shopping.

“This facility right now is expected to do about 150,000 to 180,000 packages a day, processing, and without the technology, obviously, going back to when that was all manual sortation, there’s no way you could have moved that kind of volume,” said Steve Doherty, a communications specialist for the United States Postal Service.

Doherty says if you want to make sure your package arrives by Christmas, here are some send-by dates to remember:
