Report: Canadiens sign Mike Matheson to five-year contract extension

The Montreal Canadiens announced Friday they have signed defenseman Mike Matheson to a five-year, $30-million contract extension that will pay him an annual average value of $6 million and keep him with the club through the 2030-31 season.

Matheson is in the final season of an eight-year, $39-million contract extension he signed with the Florida Panthers at the beginning of the 2017-18 campaign.
Through 22 games in 2025-26, Matheson, 31, has four goals and 10 assists for 14 points, averaging 24:50 of ice time. Now in his fourth season with Montreal, the Point-Claire, Que., native has 29 goals and 112 assists for 141 points, averaging more than 25 minutes of ice time in 232 regular-season games.
The 6-foot-2 defender was acquired by the Canadiens, along with a 2023 fourth-round pick, in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Jeff Petry and center Ryan Poehling in July 2022
Matheson, taken No. 23 overall by Florida in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, has 78 goals and 201 assists for 279 points while averaging 21:58 of ice time in 649 career regular-season games with the Canadiens, Panthers and Penguins.
Matheson has also played in 25 Stanley Cup Playoff games, where he’s recorded one goal and seven assists for eight points.
The Canadiens are 12-7-3 with 27 points with a goal differential of minus-three. Going into Friday’s slate of games, they are fourth in the Atlantic Division and one spot behind in the Eastern Conference’s Wild Card race.
Captain Nick Suzuki leads the team in both assists and points with 19 and 26, respectively. Meanwhile, Cole Caufield has a team-leading 13 goals. Goaltender Jakub Dobes has an 8-2-2 record with an .897 save percentage and 2.89 goals against average.
The Canadiens will face the Vegas Golden Knights Friday afternoon. Puck drop is at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.
