The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) and TG4 have announced a new documentary, Cartlann Christy Moore – exploring “80 years of the life, music and personal collections” of one of the country’s most iconic singer-songwriters.
Set to air on TG4 on New Year’s Eve, the documentary features new interviews and recordings of Christy Moore, as well as contributions from Michael D. Higgins, Lankum’s Radie Peat, KNEECAP’s DJ Próvaí and more.
After turning 80, Christy donated his entire personal collection to the ITMA in Dublin – including rare manuscripts, recordings, letters, setlists and unseen lyrics, which have offered fresh insights into his unique creative spirit and social conscience.
Cartlann Christy Moore – directed by Ciarán Ó Maonaigh (Brendan Gleeson’s Farewell to Hughes’s) – uses this collection to explore the life and music of Christy at “a level never captured before,” the ITMA have stated.
“Encountering Christy Moore and his personal collections, I was struck by the sheer vastness of his output over almost 60 years,” says director Ciarán Ó Maonaigh. “Countless songs and melodies that are engrained into our consciousness as Irish people. His focus, energy and all out to commitment to song was fascinating and awesome to behold.”
Cartlann Christy Moore will premiere on TG4 at 22:10 on New Year’s Eve, December 31.
