Over the years we’ve seen many a villain take over the small town of Hawkins in Netflix’s Stranger Things, from the Demogorgons, to the Mind Flayer and of course Vecna. And while there’s no sign of the Demogorgons and Vecna disappearing anytime soon, season five is also bringing another antagonist to our screens in the shape of Dr Kay, played by Linda Hamilton.
Dr Kay is introduced in the first episode of the new season, which dropped earlier today at 1am on Netflix. The new season has kickstarted with four new episodes and reunites us with the town of Hawkins, a year and a half after the events of season four.
Hawkins is under a military lockdown and Max is still in her coma. But that hasn’t stopped the group from carrying out serious investigations into the Upside Down. However, when Holly Wheeler gets kidnapped by a Demogorgon, everything changes and the group faces off against multiple threats, including the military, who are being headed up by the fearsome Dr Kay. So who is this mysterious doctor? Here’s everything to know about her.
Who is Dr Kay?
Dr Kay is a new character for Stranger Things season five and from the out-set appears to be the most senior person in the military we come across during the season. She’s set on finding out where Eleven is, however for most of the first part of the season we don’t know why.
The Duffer Brothers aka the creators of the series, have spoken about the new character of Dr Kay, with Ross Duffer explaining to Tudum, “We leaned away from the traditional scientist and gave her more of a military edge. She can fight, she can use a gun, and she doesn’t hesitate to do so. You don’t want to piss her off.”
While she comes across as the villain to us, mainly because of her obsession with Eleven, Linda Hamilton explains she’s not quite as evil as she appears. “Her work is very specific to her, and I’m playing her as if people don’t matter. Science is what matters, and she’s very much trying to stop the drama that’s unfolding and thinks she’s doing the right thing for Hawkins,” Hamilton explains. “She’s so determined that nothing really gets in her way, and that’s where it gets a little bit more interesting for the character and for the audience.”

Who is Linda Hamilton who plays Dr Kay?
For the uninitiated, Linda Hamilton is an acting icon who is best known for her role as Sarah Connor in The Terminator films.
The 69-year-old is a big fan of the series and was initially reluctant to take the part of Dr Kay because of her love of the show.
“When they called, I was like, ‘No, I’m a fan of that show. I can’t be in that show.’ So it was a stunning turn of events, and I was thrilled, absolutely thrilled,” she told Tudum. “It’s the first show I’ve ever done where I’m a fan and an actor, so what a delight.”
Just like the rest of us, Linda revealed how much love she has for the show and the cast too.
“I just think the Duffers have done a really good job doing the vast story along with characters that you really care about — and the comedy as well,” she said.
