Bears indicate Nahshon Wright will have role once injured CBs return

There has not been a better feel-good story on the Chicago Bears roster than cornerback Nahshon Wright. After being released by the Minnesota Vikings in April, Chicago signed Wright to a one-year deal and he was reunited with Al Harris, his defensive backs coach from the time they spent together with the Dallas Cowboys.

Wright has been given more opportunities with the injuries to the Bears’ secondary, especially with Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon missing most of the season through the first 11 games. Asked about the pending returns of Johnson and Gordon, head coach Ben Johnson also teased that Wright would still find himself on the field, crediting him for earning more playing time with the success he’s had.

“That’s the fun part, isn’t it?” Johnson said this week. “He’s done a phenomenal job and I think he has certainly earned playing time.”

Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen echoed Johnson’s sentiment, indicating that we’ll still be seeing Wright on the field even when the cornerback room is near full strength.

“Everybody’s going to have a role,” Allen said.

An unsung hero for the Bears defense this season, Wright is tied for the league-lead in interceptions with five, and has become a real problem for opposing quarterbacks. Although it was not expected, the Bears secondary will be even deeper and loaded with talent adding Wright in the mix with Johnson, Gordon, and Tyrique Stevenson when all of them are healthy and able to step on the field.
