Bill Skarsgård’s “compelling” near-perfect ’70s-set thriller gets brilliant first trailer

Bill Skarsgård’s ’70s-set thriller Dead Man’s Wire has dropped a brilliant first trailer. The movie premiered earlier this year to huge acclaim, debuting to a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It follows the true story of Tony Kiritsis, who takes a broker hostage armed with a shotgun and a wire after he falls behind with his mortgage payments, having become convinced that the broker won’t give him extra time because he wants to seize his property.

The gripping trailer sees Tony ring in to DJ Fred Temple’s (Colman Domingo) radio show as he declares that he is “a man that’s fighting for everything he owns”.

As the cops and media surround the property, Tony tells them that he wants an apology and compensation, before we see hostage Richard Hall (Dacre Montgomery) speak on the phone to his father (played by Al Pacino), suggesting he apologise – though the elder refuses.

The public reaction to Tony’s actions become divided, as he declares: “I’m a goddamn national hero and don’t you forget it.”

Dead Man’s Wire earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score when it premiered, since down to 97%, with Little White Lies calling it “a compelling monument to a fascinating tale” that is “haunted by the ghosts of better films”.

Dead Man’s Wire is a brilliant and surprisingly hilarious film that manages to speak to today’s struggle against a capitalist society that only wants to see a rich minority succeed,” added Loud and Clear Reviews.

The Playlist added that director Gus Van Sant “makes Dead Man’s Wire move like a well-oiled machine, even if he can only get so much mileage from an old vehicle. Simple, familiar pleasures are still pleasures.”

The Hollywood Reporter compared it to Pacino’s classic Dog Day Afternoon, suggesting it “pays tribute” while “carving its own identity”, while Next Best Picture suggested it was a “curious inverse” of the 1975 movie, even if it “doesn’t quite measure up to” it.

Dead Man’s Wire is yet to confirm a UK cinema release date.
