Davis in Aus PGA mix after embracing the grind

More than three months away from tournament golf has Australian star Cam Davis again in “love” with the game and poised to pounce at Royal Queensland this weekend.

The 30-year-old New South Welshman is seven-under par after two rounds of the Australian PGA Championship to be in contention to lift the Joe Kirkwood Cup for the first time.

“We figured it out and it was nice to finish strong,” Davis said on Friday after a second-round 67 to complement his opening-round 68.

“I’m very pleased with the last couple of days – some good golf.”

The Australian PGA marks Davis’ return to action, with previous tournament having been the PGA Tour’s St. Jude Championship, where he finished in a tie for 50th.

It was the culmination of a bad run of form for Davis, who admitted that he “needed a break”.

“I was glad that I kind of already locked up my (PGA Tour) status for next year early enough to be able to take that time off,” he said.

“I feel like it is pretty much seven years straight where I haven’t taken an off-season.

“I’ve just kind of grinded all the way through it. Playing in Australia is amazing, but it’s also the one little period of time the PGA TOUR is not playing, so if anything I was always playing more golf than a lot of the guys were over there.

“It was great to take the time off, it was great to get the love for the game back.”
