UK Championship preview

Not for the first time, all eyes will be on Ronnie O’Sullivan at York’s Barbican Centre over the next nine days as the Rocket bids to win a record-extending ninth UK Championship crown.

The Rocket, now based in Dubai, will be competing on home soil for the first time since losing in the World Championship semi-finals in May.

He has dominated the first Triple Crown event of the season like no other, but he has has been nowhere near his best this season and he could meet old foe Mark Selby in the last 16, tempering enthusiasm to back him at 15-2.

O’Sullivan is housed in an extremely competitive bottom half of the draw, where 2021 winner, current world champion and tournament favourite Zhao Xintong is the headline act.

But threats abound wherever you look in the section, with in-form trio John Higgins, Kyren Wilson and Shaun Murphy, as well as Selby and Barry Hawkins, joining O’Sullivan and Zhao.

Defending champion and number one seed Judd Trump has far fewer stumbling blocks in a softer top half.

The four-time finalist beat Hawkins 10-8 to win the title last year and has been in solid form this season. The Ace in the Pack is yet to win a trophy in 2025-26, but he was runner-up in both the Northern Ireland Open and recent Champion of Champions event and his path to the final looks much easier than his chief market rivals.

A change of cue tip is not ideal but the world number one has been going deep in tournaments despite not being at his best. If his new set-up clicks in York, Trump will be a hard man to stop.

Another former UK champion who looks overpriced in the top half of the draw is Mark Allen.

The Northern Irishman relishes his visits to the Barbian Centre, where has reached the final on three occasions, winning in 2022.

A three-time semi-finalist to boot, Allen has already won this season’s English Open as well as reaching the last four in his homeland, Wuhan and the Riyadh Season Snooker Championship.

He could meet Trump in the last eight but whoever wins that high-quality potential quarter-final would have an easier route to next Sunday’s title showdown than many of the 32-man field.
