The Kangaroos are having their own territory now
After the ball lived in Brisbane’s half of the ground in the first half of the quarter, the Kangaroos are getting some headway now.
The Lions are able to get out of trouble after winning a free kick in defence.
Brisbane’s Charlotte Mullins leads all players with four tackles.
Sophie Conway is the leading ball-winner on the ground with eight touches.
Three minutes to go in the opening term.

Hartill is absolutely crunching the Kangaroos
Eleanor Hartill is like a wrecking ball out there!
She first floors Emma King on the wing and the goes again to crunch another Kangaroo with a bruising tackle at half forward.
There is absolutely NO breathing room for any of these players out here.
The Lions lead the tackle count 9-4.
Brisbane’s pressure factor so far is 223, dwarfing North’s 189, which isn’t a bad mark at all.

Sheerin kicks the Kangaroos’ opener in dubious circumstances
Eilish Sheerin snaps through her first goal of the night with a wonderful left-footed snap around her shoulder, but the Lions aren’t too happy!
Tahlia Randall tried to take the ball out of a ruck contest and was tackled while kicking and drops the ball, but the umpire calls play on.
Garner snaps up the loose ball and sets up Sheerin with a lovely handball.
Unlucky there, the Lions, that should’ve been incorrect disposal.

O’Shea denies the Lions another goal!
Erika O’Shea has to run back towards her own goal and gets a palm on the footy to rush through a behind.
The Kangaroos won the second centre clearance of the match, but Darren Crocker won’t be too happy with just how easily the Lions were able to go from end to end.
The ball has been in the Lions’ half of the ground for 74 per cent of the match so far. Brisbane has five inside 50s to two.

Mullins gets the Lions off to a dream start
Charlotte Mullins has the first goal of the grand final and the Lions are PUMPED!
She trapped one of the Kangaroos defenders dropping the ball inside 50 and won a free kick.
Most importantly, she goes back and absolutely flushes the set shot from virtually directly in front 25m out from goal.
Mullins also kicked the opener in the 2023 grand final. A good omen for the Lions perhaps?

Lions dominating the territory early
It’s been a good start from the Lions, who have had the ball in their half of the ground for the first few minutes.
They’ve got a good wall set up that’s currently locking the Kangaroos in their defensive half of the ground.
Emma Kearney with her work cut out early down there.

What do we think about the grand final venue?
It’s a shame that there is no middle ground to be found between a sold out Princes Park and a huge step up to somewhere like Marvel Stadium. Surely with all the grounds around Melbourne some compromise is available if they put their minds to it !
– Phillip
It’s a great point you make Phillip, I think an in-between venue with the capacity of around 30,000 would make perfect sense.
In saying that, the AFLW grand final held at the Adelaide Oval in 2019 drew 53,034 spectators, so who’s to say that they couldn’t fill out Docklands?

Can anyone stop the Riddell-Garner two-headed monster?
Ash Riddell (left) and Jasmine Garner (right) have become the AFLW’s most dominant duo this season. (Getty Images)
This is going to be the major key to tonight’s decider — the star midfield duo of Ash Riddell and Jasmine Garner.
Riddell has averaged a quite ridiculous 35.3 disposals per game and had 34 touches along with 472m gained when the Kangaroos beat the Lions in Round 5.
Garner too was dominant in that Round 5 clash, tallying 25 disposals to go along with nine tackles, five clearances and a goal.
The Kangaroos skipper has averaged 27.4 touches per game and has kicked 20 goals.
She went supernova mode to rescue her side last week in that epic prelim against the Dees.
The Lions cannot afford both of them to get off the leash tonight.

Lions star Courtney Hodder speaks ahead of grand final
Courtney Hodder looms as one of the keys to a Brisbane win tonight. (Getty Images)
Courtney Hodder is an excitement machine and could absolutely be a game-turner tonight.
Hodder’s had a tremendous season, averaging 16.1 disposals per game and kicking 14 goals. She’s going to be a handful for whoever has the assignment of matching up on her tonight.
“It’s definitely the decider, it kind of feels like the State of Origin for us,” she tells Fox Footy.
“We’ve just taken all the little steps that we’ve needed to in order to get to today, we’re just super pumped.”

Last year’s premiership skipper is feeling relaxed
Emma Kearney’s distribution off halfback will be a major key for the Kangaroos in the grand final. (Getty Images)
This time last year, it was Emma Kearney who was leading the Kangaroos through the banner.
This year the veteran has passed on captaincy duties to Jasmine Garner, and it’s been a seamless transition, to say the least.
“I was pretty nervous going into the prelim, but after getting over the line, feeling pretty relaxed with this one,” Kearney tells Fox Footy.
“Any way you look at it, [the preliminary final] certainly gave us a test that we hadn’t had previously.
“We were able to put into practice some of the things that we’ve been trying to implement in terms of saving the game mode or winning the game mode.”
She says she expects for her to opponent to be either Courtney Hodder or Catherine Svarc.
Kearney is also expecting the Lions to bring “a lot of pressure”.
“That’s how they base their game — around the contest,” she says. “We expect it to be a pretty fierce.”

Brisbane’s grand final experience is very legitimate
Brisbane is a veteran outfit to say the least. The Lions might be up against an absolute juggernaut in the Kangaroos, but they certainly won’t be overawed by the stage.
Three Lions — Breanna Koenen, Ally Anderson and Shannon Campbell — are playing in their seventh grand final tonight.
