Film4 is broadcasting a fantastic double bill of beloved musical films that fans won’t want to miss. Starting at 4:45pm today (Saturday, 29th November), the original 1990s classic will be followed immediately by its follow-up at 6:50pm.

Following the broadcast, both pictures will be available to stream free of charge on Channel 4 for a limited period. The musical entertainment on offer includes 1992’s beloved comedy Sister Act, featuring Whoopi Goldberg as nightclub vocalist Deloris, who must take refuge in a convent after her mobster partner betrays her.

Admirers of the first instalment will be thrilled to discover that the follow-up, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, which many regard as superior, will screen immediately after.

In this outing, Deloris reconnects with her religious companions, played by acclaimed actresses including Downton Abbey and Harry Potter star Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena, to rescue their failing educational institution through an inspiring musical showcase from their pupils.

R&B icon Lauryn Hill makes her screen debut in the underappreciated second film, which prompted one IMDb reviewer to declare: “Not often is the sequel better than the original but Sister Act 2 breaks that stereotype”, reports the Mirror.

“The music, acting, singing are all incredible. My favorite movie of all time and Whoopi once again showed up and showed out.” Another commented: “I loved this so much, even better than the first movie. So much talent and energy with a great story line.

“Once again, Goldberg delivers. This is a movie I could watch every year, so glad it is on every Christmas!” Regarding the original film, movie enthusiasts certainly believe it remains impressive more than three decades on.

One reviewer awarded it 10/10, commenting: “I feel that this movie should be a classic someday. The music is outstanding. I love the way that Whoopi sings. She has a fantastic voice for the movie. This movie is timeless and priceless. It is one of Whoopi’s finest movies.”

The acclaim extended to Letterboxd, where one viewer admitted: “I’m not ashamed to admit I was almost brought to tears at the end there…seeing Maggie Smith in anything still hits hard. Gone too soon.

“This film is a camp masterpiece, if you can watch it with a crowd as rowdy as mine, it will not disappoint,” another commented. One enthusiastic viewer even declared: “This MIGHT be the best movie ever made.”
