Winter Storm Warning issued, heavy snow and treacherous travel expected over the weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNING for all of Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio from 7 am Saturday to 7 pm Sunday. First Alert Weather Days are also in effect for both Saturday and Sunday, a call we made Tuesday of this week. While the entire region is under the warning, not everyone will see the same snow amounts!
Let’s dig in.
TIMING
The timeline of this storm system hasn’t changed much. I believe the start time window will more realistically be between noon and 2 pm Saturday (versus 10 am to noon). System snow is expected to end by sunrise Sunday morning, with perhaps some additional, spotty lake effect snow accumulations of an inch or two possible Sunday afternoon and evening.
If you’re planning on traveling regionally Saturday morning, you should be in good shape. Just know Northwest Indiana will likely start seeing snow between 8 am and 10 am, so if you are headed that way, be prepared to see conditions gradually deteriorate the farther west you go.
The heaviest snow—when snowfall rates could reach 1-2″ per hour at times—is expected to occur between 6 pm and 11 pm. Roads will quickly become snow covered (if they aren’t already before 6p) and visibility will worsen. The snow is expected to lighten up overnight into Sunday morning and could briefly transition to a bit of rain/drizzle. By the time that happens, however, most of the steady precipitation will be done.

AMOUNTS
Snow forecast amounts have only been adjusted upward slightly. The biggest change has been to include northern Allen and Wabash counties in the 6-8″+ range. The 4-6″ range encompasses most of Van Wert, Wells, and Adams counties. Everywhere else (far southern Wells, Adams, and Van Wert counties, as well as all of Jay county) is still expected to see 2-4″.

And, if you’re interested, what are the odds of seeing “One Gunther,” or approximately 10″, of snow? Gunther, for those who are unaware, is my Shorkie (Shih tzu/Yorkie mix) who measures about 10″ from paw to snout 🙂
Best chance of one Gunther, or approximately 10″, of snow(WPTA)RISKS
Outside of slippery roads and low visibility at times, Sunday evening and night will turn much colder, resulting in any wet spots/slush on the road refreezing. The Monday morning commute will likely be icy.
BEYOND MONDAY
Temperatures will stay cold all week long with highs below freezing and lows in the teens. We may even see some mornings, like midweek, with wind chills below zero. So whatever falls over the weekend will be around for the next week or more!
Stay warm and safe, and try to enjoy the snow if you can 🙂
