One train takes 300 cars off the road

One train will take three hundred cars off the road, providing a public transport option to increasing populations in counties like Mayo, and in Sligo, further down the line.
That’s the reason that campaigners like Claremorris based Colmán Ó Raghallaigh of West on Track have and continue to insist
that both passenger and freight services are restored to western counties.
Yesterday the government announced that the long awaited Claremorris to Athenry section of the Western Rail Corridor is due to be under construction by 2030.
The commitment was secured as a targeted priority project in the Department of Transport’s Plan for the revised National Development Plan.
The Government approved a 24 billion euro plan for transport nationally for the next four years.
It includes prioritising projects such as Metro and the DART and more locally the Athenry to Claremorris rail line.
The plan will see 10 billion euro spent on public transport and nine point seven billion on the country’s roads.
Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien said that the public should feel confident timelines will be met.
This lunchtime Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley spoke to a delighted Colmán in light of yesterday’s firm commitments and she asked him if he’s confident that the project will be delivered within four years…
