Can’t go home? See the Thanksgiving menu for University of Michigan students still in town

ANN ARBOR, MI — Are you a student staying in Ann Arbor this Thanksgiving? The University of Michigan dining team is whipping up a special meal for you.

Mosher-Jordan Dining Hall is hosting its annual Thanksgiving meal from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27, at the dorm at 200 Observatory St.

Those without a meal plan may purchase the all-you-can-eat dinner with Blue Bucks for $15.25 or with a credit card for $18.30, plus taxes.

The UM dining team will provide a traditional Thanksgiving meal for students unable to go home this holiday while meeting the “diverse needs of our students” and introducing American dishes to international students, General Manager Steven Ackermann said.

Starter soups include loaded baked potato soup and butternut squash soup with coconut milk.

Thanksgiving staples on this year’s menu include herb roasted turkey breast, roasted garlic herb prime rib, garlicky mashed potatoes, stuffing, demi mushrooms and roasted shaved Brussels sprouts.

But the UM menu is not just limited to traditional American dishes. Students can also pick from a variety of Asian dishes, such as General Tso’s beef, rice, tofu and chopped green onions.

The menu features an abundance of vegetables, as well as halal and deli options.

The UM dining hall menu is also suitable for sweet eaters. Desserts include butterscotch spice cookie bars, pecan pie torte, pumpkin pie and apple pie.

Ackermann anticipates between 900 to 1,000 guests on Thursday, a higher estimate with the big Michigan vs. Ohio State football game on Saturday, Nov. 29.

Students are excited for the menu every year and give great feedback, Ackermann said.

He credits the culinary team, which includes 21 full-time cooks, 14 full-time food service workers and over a dozen student workers, for organizing the kitchen this Thanksgiving.

UM dining staff also partner with the university’s International Center, which plans to send about 250 people staying on campus this year, and Maize and Blue Cupboard, UM’s food pantry that will help students eat a meal that day.

University buses will have special loop routes to take students to Mosher-Jordan. The earliest bus leaves North Campus at Northwood 1, 2 and 3 at 11 a.m., followed by Bursley Hall at 11:08 a.m.

The last bus picks up from Mosher-Jordan at 3 p.m. For a full transportation schedule, visit dining.umich.edu/menus-locations/thanksgiving.

“I am excited, it’s going to be another great meal that we put on for the students,” Ackermann said.
