UAB could be without 42 players, multiple starters for game at Tulsa

UAB will be severely shorthanded for Saturday’s game against Tulsa. The Blazers listed 39 players as out and three players as questionable on Saturday’s mandated availability report, which was released two hours before the 2 p.m. CT kickoff.

UAB’s absentees include both of its starting offensive tackles, Brandon Sneh and Logan Moore. Starting defensive end Amorie Morrison, starting linebacker Tylan McNichols and starting defensive backs Tamarion Crumpley and Perry Fisher will all miss their second straight games after sitting out last week’s loss to South Florida. Meanwhile, starting defensive tackles Eamon Smals and Jonathan Allen were both listed as well as starting receiver Xavier Daisy are all listed as questionable.

Saturday’s availability report included nine offensive linemen, seven defensive linemen and seven members of the secondary.

Last weekend, UAB had a stabbing incident that saw offensive lineman Daniel Mincey arrested on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder while sending teammates JaSire Peterson and Josh Underwood to the hospital hours before the Blazers’ game against South Florida.

UAB ultimately elected to play in the game, but players were given the choice to sit out. Earlier this week, UAB interim head coach Alex Mortensen said that the option not to play was extended into this week’s game against Tulsa.

“What’s most important to us is the well-being of our student-athletes, of our football players,” Mortensen said. “We’re going to make sure that they have every opportunity this week to get the counseling services they need. We’re going to make sure that they have every opportunity to step away if they want to step away, if they choose not to play in the game. If they don’t want to practice, or if they just need to just get out of here for a little bit, we’re going to give them every opportunity to do that each time we meet and make sure that door is wide open.”
