Maignan-Provedel duel could be key in Milan vs. Lazio – their impressive numbers

Mike Maignan has spent the few days after his derby heroics in the headlines, but his opposite number has been very impressive for Lazio. 

There will be a number of very interesting battles across the pitch during Saturday night’s game at San Siro, and we picked out five of them earlier today. There will be a long-distance contest between Maignan and Ivan Provedel, who will be between the posts at both ends.

Impressive numbers

As MilanPress write, it is a contest between two goalkeepers who have enjoyed an excellent start to 2025-26, given they have the same number of goals conceded so far in the first 12 games (nine). It is the joint-best record, together with Roma’s Mile Svilar.

According to Expected Goals On Target (xGOT – a post-shot metric that measures the quality of shots that are on target) against, Provedel should have conceded 15.2 goals, and is therefore has a positive difference of 6.2.

Mike Maignan – again according to xGOT – should have conceded 13.2 goals, which meansa positive difference of 4.2. In second place, between the two, is Svilar with +4.6.

Provedel currently has a clean sheet percentage of 58.3%, with Svilar in second at 50%. Maignan meanwhile is 10th, at 36.4%. In terms of save percentage, the Italian is again ahead with 83.3% which puts him in second (behind Svilar and the leader Jean Butez), while Maignan is fourth in Serie A with 81.1%.
