Aussie hero chases drought breaker; LIV youngster’s hot start – Aus PGA LIVE

Fans at the Australian PGA Championship’s party hole were cruelly denied a $1 million prize as Adam Bland’s tee shot at the par 3 17th burned the edge of the cup, but did not drop.

If a hole-in-one is made at the party hole on Sunday, spectators who witness it will win a share of $1 million and their hearts were in their mouths as Bland’s ball headed towards the hole.

Their hopes were dashed quickly though as they saw the ball slingshot off the lip and the veteran left-hander, who finished -4 for the tournament, had to settle for a birdie.

At the top of the leaderboard, Spaniard David Puig opened up a three-shot lead with a hat-trick of birdies at two, three and four.

The 23-year-old, who finished tenth on the LIV Golf individual standings this year, added his fourth birdie of the day at the eighth, and after completing 11 holes he sat at -17.

Australia’s Marc Leishman and Min Woo Lee (-15) are hot on the heels of Puig with five and six holes left to play respectively.

Lee’s playing partner Adam Scott (-12) has been cursing a cold putter for much of the day and will need to storm home to be in with a chance.

Fellow Australian Cam Davis (-8) was in the mix before a bogey at 11, a double bogey at 12 and back-to-back bogeys at 13 and 14 ended his hopes.

Lee and Scott are looking to add to their legacies with another Australian PGA crown.

If Lee can prevail it would be his second triumph in Brisbane in three years, while Scott is gunning to join the likes of Cameron Smith (who missed the cut this week), Peter Senior, Robert Allenby and Peter Lonard as a three-time champion in the modern era.

For all his success on the global stage, Leishman (-11) has not won either of Australia’s two major golf tournaments – the Australian PGA and Australian Open – and is determined to claim a big home win.

When asked after his third round if he felt like victory in Australia was due, Leishman said: “I hope so, yeah.”

“So many good players and you’re never owed anything in this game,” he continued. “Yeah, certainly hope it’s my time. I can take care of that tomorrow.

“It’s in my hands. If I shoot a low one, I’m a good chance to come away it, but there’s also a lot of other really good players and all that, so it’s a strong field, tough golf course and just excited to have a chance, just be amongst it.”
