San Jose police investigate shooting at Westfield Valley Fair Mall that sent 3 to hospital

Three people were taken to the hospital after they were shot at San Jose’s Westfield Valley Fair on Black Friday, police said.

The San Jose Police Department said they first received a report of a shooting at about 5:40 p.m. Three victims were located and taken to a nearby hospital, police said, and their injuries weren’t life-threatening.

On Saturday, San Jose police said two people were involved in an altercation when one of them shot the other. Two bystanders — a woman and a 16-year-old girl — were hit by stray gunfire.

The gunman remains at large. No information about a suspect has been released, but police said initial information led them to believe it was gang-motivated. San Jose police temporarily evacuated the mall and said the shooting appears to be isolated, with no greater threat to the community.

“My prayers are with these victims and I know our officers are doing everything they can to find the person responsible and hold them accountable,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said in a post on X. “Currently, there is no ongoing threat to the community but please avoid the area.”

People were urged to avoid the area through Friday night while officers investigated the shooting. But in a post shared by police, Westfield Valley Fair said it would open at noon Saturday, and shoppers who left their vehicles overnight could go back to get it at their earliest convenience.

Also, shoppers who may have left their belongings will be able to go to a collection site at the mall’s leasing suite on the 3rd floor, across from the security dispatch. The site will open at noon, as well.

“A shooting in a crowded mall on a busy shopping day is deeply concerning,” said SJPD Chief Paul Joseph. “To reassure our community, we are increasing patrols throughout the weekend while our Detectives continue their focused work to identify and locate the individual responsible. I have full confidence the suspect will be brought to justice swiftly.”
