Deadly Shooting of National Guard Soldier Sparks Online Controversy and Terrorism Investigation
A tragic shooting incident in Washington has resulted in the death of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old member of the West Virginia National Guard, raising serious concerns about potential links to terrorism. The gunman, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, is currently under investigation.
Following the news of Beckstrom’s passing, New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani expressed his condolences on social media platform X, highlighting the profound loss of someone so young. His message read, “I’m devastated to learn of the passing of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom.” In addition to the heartbreak the death caused, the incident quickly ignited a firestorm on social media.
Right-wing commentator Laura Loomer criticized Mamdani for his response, pointing out what she perceived as a failure to address the role of Islamic terrorism. Loomer accused him of remaining silent on issues she deemed crucial, saying, “Zero mention of Islamic terrorism from NYC’s Islamic jihadist mayor.” She argued that Mamdani’s comments were disrespectful to “blood and soil Americans” and expressed her belief that he was disconnected from their concerns.
The shooting occurred near the White House, where Beckstrom and another National Guard member, Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, were shot at close range. As of now, Wolfe remains in critical condition. In a statement made during a Thanksgiving address, former President Donald Trump confirmed Beckstrom’s death and noted the ongoing investigation.

Lakanwal has been arrested and his arrival in the U.S. raised questions given the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Operation Allies Welcome program was designed to provide refuge for Afghans who assisted the U.S. during its engagement in Afghanistan. Trump later announced plans to reevaluate immigration processing for Afghans and indicated intentions to suspend migration from certain nations, although he did not clarify which countries those were.
Loomer’s criticism of Mamdani is not new; she has a history of targeting him on social media. She has voiced her disdain for his election win, suggesting it signals a dangerous trend, even comparing it to the events of 9/11. Previously, Loomer referred to Mamdani as a jihadist, a label that received pushback from Trump, who insisted in a recent meeting that he never branded the mayor-elect with such terms, characterizing him instead as a “great guy.”
