India vs South Africa ODI 2025: Rohit About to Join Special Club with Sachin, Dravid & Kohli

After the horror show in the Tests vs South Africa, India are hoping to redeem themselves in the ODIs that begin on November 30. Former skipper Rohit Sharma is back in the side as he looks to continue to make a strong case for himself as far as playing the 2027 ODI World Cup is concerned. Rohit has retired from Tests and T20Is so this is the only format he is active in.

Rohit Sharma in Good Form

Rohit is coming into this series after two brilliant knocks Down Under. He was one of India’s bright lights in the 2-1 series defeat vs Australia. His 73 in Adelaide went in vain but an unbeaten 121 in the dead rubber in Sydney gave India a much-needed win and helped them avoid a 3-0 whitewash. Now, ‘Hitman’ is on the verge of another milestone that shall make him a member of a special club that already has Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli.

Rohit Sharma Closing in on Major Milestone

At the moment, Rohit has 19,902 international runs. That means he needs just 98 more to join the 20,000-run club in international cricket. Only three Indians have done it before him. Sachin tops the charts for India and overall with 34,357 runs while Kohli has 27, 673 to his name, making him second among Indians, third overall and highest among active players. Dravid has made 24,208 runs at international level. On the overall list, Rohit is currently in 14th position.

World Record on the Cards for Rohit Sharma

The right-hander is also on the cusp of another milestone along with a world record. If he hits one more six, Rohit shall become only the second player in ODI history to hit 350 ODI sixes. If he hits three more, he will be the highest six-hitter in the format. Should he manage to hit another eight sixes, he will be the only one with 650 international sixes.

Rohit Sharma’s Honours With Team India

Rohit is 38 and has played international cricket for 18 years. He was part of the Indian sides that won the 2007 and 2024 T20 World Cups along with the 2013 and 2025 Champions Trophies. He was also part of the teams that lost the 2023 ODI World Cup final, 2014 T20 World Cup final and 2017 Champions Trophy final. He will want to exit the side by winning the ODI World Cup, the only thing missing from his cabinet. He was not part of the squad that won the 2011 ODI World Cup. Rohit also played the 2021 and 2023 WTC Finals which India lost. He has no chance of winning that trophy as he has already retired from Tests.

Rohit Sharma’s Legacy in Indian Cricket

‘Hitman’ is in the twilight of his career. He may or may not make it to the World Cup two years from now. He faces a race against time and his performance will be under the scanner. But whether or not he makes it that far and whether or not he wins it, Rohit’s legacy in Indian cricket is at a different level. A modern legend of the game, his exit from cricket shall leave a big hole in the sport. When it does happen and one day it will, cricket will end up poorer for it.
