Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Prepare for ODI Series Against South Africa

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma intensify training ahead of the ODI series against South Africa, aiming for strong performances on home soil.

The anticipation builds as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma prepare to return to international cricket on home soil. The duo will feature in the first One Day International (ODI) of a three-match series against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday. In preparation for this match, both players have been diligently training in the nets, arriving early to ensure they are in peak condition.

Kohli and Sharma have been demonstrating high levels of intensity during their practice sessions, focusing on fine-tuning their skills ahead of the clash with the Proteas. They recently returned from an ODI series against Australia, where Rohit Sharma was named Player of the Series, achieving one century and one half-century. Kohli, however, struggled initially, not scoring in his first two ODIs but rebounded with an impressive unbeaten 74 in the final match in Sydney.

Given their previous performances, it is clear that both players are eager to excel and solidify their positions ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Their training has included a variety of shots, both grounded and aerial, to ensure they are fully prepared.

During a recent practice session, Kohli faced left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, showcasing his batting prowess with a remarkable aerial shot that impressed wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. Pant, from behind the stumps, expressed his admiration, saying, “Bhai ji, acha ball tha yeh. Tagda maar diya. (Brother, it was a good ball. What a shot).”

In addition to their batting practice, Rohit Sharma was observed engaging in a lengthy discussion with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is expected to open the batting alongside him due to Shubman Gill’s neck injury.

Kohli appeared to be in good spirits during the training, joking with Pant and Arshdeep. The atmosphere was positive as the team gears up for the upcoming series.

On Saturday, stand-in captain KL Rahul spoke to the media about the critical role of experienced players like Kohli and Sharma within the team. “Their importance at any point is huge. To have senior players in the team obviously makes the dressing room feel a lot more confident. Just having their presence and experience helps a lot of players in the dressing room and helps the team. So, we’re really happy that they’re here,” Rahul stated.

As the first ODI approaches, the Indian team is keen to start the series on a strong note, with Kohli and Sharma at the forefront of their campaign against South Africa.
