Crystal Palace to agree Jean-Philippe Mateta deal – ‘I expect this one to be done’

Sun 30 November 2025 8:00, UK

Crystal Palace striker Jean Philippe Mateta is expected to commit his future to the club by signing a new deal.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen and Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who is confident an agreement will be achieved between Crystal Palace and Mateta over fresh terms.

Mateta has yet to sign a new contract at Palace despite talks, with his current deal expiring in 2027.

Talks between Mateta and Crystal Palace though are stalling due to the wage package being offered to the 28-year-old.

Steve Parish to ‘bite the bullet’ on Jean-Philippe Mateta deal

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Crystal Palace will agree to Mateta’s demands to keep him at Selhurst Park.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insists the Frenchman deserves improved terms.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I expect that one to be done. I expect him to do very well.

He’s earned that contract. He’s been accused of going missing occasionally, but nevertheless, his goals do keep coming with a bit more regularity. I don’t think Palace want to upset anyone right now.

We’ve all seen with Eze, what a miss he was and how well he’s playing for Arsenal right now. And so they’ve lost some quality. But I think Mateta is important for them and I do expect Palace to, particularly the European run going on right now, to be able to afford to get his contract, get him to a level that he’s happy with.

And then once he’s under contract, if he does perform extremely well, then of course they’re in a position to get an even higher valuation for him should he end up going elsewhere. But yes, I expect Steve Parish and Palace to bite the bullet and get that new contract done and pay the amount that a striker can demand.”

Crystal Palace European ambitions take a hit

Playing Champions League football is an ambition for Mateta in the future, but Crystal Palace suffered a European blow with defeat at Strasbourg.

Crystal Palace have lost two of their four Europa Conference League fixtures this season, with the Eagles sitting 18th in the league phase table.

Progression to the knockout stages is therefore not guaranteed, with two games left to play away to Shelbourne and at home to KuPS.
