India vs South Africa LIVE SCORE UPDATES 1st ODI: Breetzke-Zorzi rebuild SA after early wickets

Another Ro-ko Show was on display today in Ranchi’s JSCA International Cricket Stadium as the duo tore apart the South African bowling line-up to help India put a mammoth total of 350 for 8 on the board after 50 overs. Proteas now need to chase down the XXX-run target to keep their unbeaten run on the Indian tour intact.

Earlier, India’s bad luck with the toss continued as they lost their 19th consecutive ODI toss and were asked to bat first by Proteas skipper Aiden Markram. India got off to a good start with Yashasvi Jaiswal (18) looking in good touch until he edged the ball from Nandre Burger to the keeper in the fourth over to hand South Africa their first success in the match.

However, Kohli and Rohit then took charge and put up a brilliant half-century stand in just 40 balls to help India finish the powerplay at 80 for the loss of just one wicket. Kohli continued his form and brought up his 76th ODI half-century before Rohit joined him by scoring his 60th ODI half-century. He then broke Afridi’s record for most ODI sixes before finally losing his wicket on 57 off Marco Jansen. Before that, he and Kohli had put up their 20th 100-run stand in ODIs, which is the joint-highest with Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara and only behind Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly with 26.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s ODI return did not go as planned as he lost his wicket for just 8 off Ottneil Baartman, who then removed Washington Sundar (13) to put a halt to India’s battering onslaught. While India lost wickets at one end, Kohli continued the onslaught at the other and brought up his 52nd ODI century to put India en route to a mammoth total. Kohli’s brilliant innings came to an end on 135 when he lost his wicket to Nandre Burger.

Indian stand-in skipper KL Rahul then took centre stage and scored his 19th ODI half-century before losing his wicket on 60 to Marco Jansen. In the end, Ravindra Jadeja, with a brilliant cameo of 32, helped India finish the innings at 349 for 8 after 50 overs.
