West Ham vs Liverpool preview
West Ham were in the depths of despair not so long ago, but they have taken seven points from their last three Premier League games and can secure at least a share of the spoils against Liverpool at the London Stadium.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s only previous experience of managing a London club was a four-month stint at Tottenham in 2021, and he seemed at risk of an early exit from the Hammers after failing to get an instant response from the players.
After a dismal start to his West Ham tenure, Nuno was quoted at single figures in next-manager-to-go markets, but he has overseen a dramatic improvement and is winning over sections of the club’s long-suffering supporters.
West Ham gave up a two-goal lead in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, but the result was enough to move them out of the relegation zone for the first time since mid-September.
And they will be stronger for the visit of Liverpool with Lucas Paqueta returning after a one-game ban.
Paqueta’s absence at Bournemouth may have been a reason for Nuno switching to a three-man defence.
West Ham are showing they can perform in different shapes and their flexibility is in stark contrast to Liverpool, who have looked tactically inept during their recent losing streak.
The Reds were the summer’s big spenders but they looked nothing like a cohesive unit in the home losses to Nottingham Forest (3-0) and PSV Eindhoven (4-1).
Arne Slot is struggling to come up with the answers and, to this point, has persisted with Mohamed Salah, who has looked a diminished force in attack and a liability on occasions when asked to defend.
But Salah’s form is far from the only issue given the underwhelming performances of big-money signings Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez.
Liverpool are clearly devoid of confidence and have got to the point where they may need to go back to basics to start the recovery process.
Slot’s side have the talent to get the better of West Ham, but they seem to be in a confused state and are opposable odds-on shots this weekend.
Diouf can show his creative side
West Ham have taken some stick over their summer recruitment but they will be happy with the impact of left-back El-Hadji Malick Diouf, who has quickly established himself as an important player. Diouf has delivered three assists and looks overpriced to lay on a goal against Liverpool.
Porous Pool could drop points
Liverpool have been struggling defensively and may need to score a couple of goals to get away from West Ham without suffering a fourth straight defeat. The Reds are the only top flight side without a draw on their record but that could be about to change on matchday 13.
West Ham vs Liverpool Bet Builder
Jarrod Bowen to score
Bowen was playing well even when most of his teammates were not. He has been a shining light for West Ham and could play a starring role on Sunday.
Over 2 goals
Slot seems determined to persist with an attacking approach and that should mean thrills and spills at both ends with a high-scoring outcome.
Alexis Mac Allister to be carded
Mac Allister was well behaved earlier in the campaign but he has been carded in two of his last four Liverpool appearances and could be cautioned in the capital.
