What: State championship weekend is capped by the anticipated showdown of the top two teams in the state, with undefeated Cass Tech and Catholic Central facing off in a battle of teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the state.
The teams also feature two of the top playmakers in the state, with Cass Tech leaning on CJ Sadler and Catholic Central featuring Samson Gash.
Cass Tech is the defending state champion, beating Hudsonville in the state final. In its 2024 playoff run, the Technicians edged Catholic Central 17-14. Cass Tech owns a 4-2 series record against Catholic Central, including state-championship wins over the Shamrocks in 2011, 2012 and 2016.
Cass Tech’s playoff run to the final includes wins over Hartland, Brighton, Clarkston and East Kentwood, while Catholic Central has beaten Northville, Dearborn Fordson, Saline and Rochester Adams.
Catholic Central makes its 18th state-final appearance, with a 10-7 record in the championship game. The Shamrocks have lost their last four state-final appearances, finishing second in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016. Catholic Central has claimed 10 state championships (1979, 1990, 1992, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2009).
