Nearly 700 flights headed in and out of Denver International Airport on Sunday failed to leave the gate on time, and a dozen more were canceled entirely, according to flight tracking data.
As of 6 p.m. Sunday, 694 flights at DIA had been delayed and 12 were canceled, according to flight tracking software FlightAware.
Nearly 700 flights were delayed on Saturday after Denver saw its second-latest first snow of the season on record — with 0.2 inches of snow accumulating at DIA — and dozens were canceled.
No snow fell at the Denver airport Sunday morning, but temperatures dropped into the single digits overnight, according to weather service data. With wind chill, the 9-degree overnight low felt closer to 2 degrees below zero.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for DIA at 4:38 p.m. Sunday, citing high winds. The traffic management program was lifted at 6 p.m., according to the FAA alert.
Sunday’s delays included 223 Southwest flights, 202 United flights, 154 SkyWest flights, 27 Frontier flights, 22 Delta flights, 17 American Airlines flights and 12 Key Lime Air flights, according to FlightAware. Nine other airlines delayed between one and five flights.
SkyWest, a regional airline for United, canceled seven flights headed in and out of DIA. United and Delta each canceled two flights, followed by one from Southwest.
