Deep inside the ruined reactor of Chernobyl, scientists discovered a black fungus, Cladosporium sphaerospermum, growing on walls and surfaces exposed to intense radiation. Despite gamma rays, high radioactivity and decades of decay, this fungus not only survives, it grows.
