“Where some of us not only speak Welsh, but encourage you to speak Welsh to us. So enjoy the show!”
Fans flooded the comments with messages of surprise, as one person playfully said: “Wow, he does a Welsh accent so good for an American…”
A second added: “Wait, wait, wait what? He’s Welsh?” and a third person said: “I did not know this man was Welsh.”
Someone else echoed: “Seriously where has this man been all this time? Such a fantastic actor, his role of Nile Jarvis, truly chef kiss. I am amazed. And I had no idea he is Welsh!”
Matthew is indeed Welsh – he was born and raised in Cardiff, Wales and is the son of Glyn, a headmaster, and Helen Evans, a teacher.
At age 17, after playing Elvis Presley in a school musical, he applied to and was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.
His older sister Rachel, now a BBC broadcast journalist, also attended.
During Matthew’s time at RADA he appeared in the BBC police series Back-Up as well as in House of America.
He returned to Cardiff to act in his own language in the Welsh film Bydd yn Wrol (Be Brave), for which he won Best Actor at the Bafta Cymru (Welsh BAFTAs).
He is known for his Emmy-winning role as Philip Jennings on The Americans.
He also starred as Kevin Walker on the TV show Brothers & Sisters, and played Dylan Thomas in the film The Edge of Love.
Matthew is best mates with Liar star Ioan Gruffudd and lived with him for 10 years.
