Massive car hire app to cease ALL operations in UK by end of this year as bookings suspended

CAR-sharing giant Zipcar is set to cease its UK operations – according to an email sent to its customers.
The company has reportedly begun a formal consultation with its employees, while bookings are being temporarily suspended – with none to be made available beyond December 31.

Despite the proposal, customer accounts are to remain open until a final decision is made following the consultation.
In the message, members are directed to CoMoUK, the national charity for shared transport, to explore alternative car‑sharing options.
Signed by James Taylor, General Manager of Zipcar UK, the message reads: “I’m writing to let you know that we are proposing to cease the UK operations of Zipcar and have today started formal consultation with our UK employees.
“We will temporarily suspend bookings, pending the outcome of this consultation.

“This means it will not be possible to make any new bookings beyond 31st December 2025, pending the outcome of the consultation.
“Although we propose to cease operations in the UK, your account will remain open until the final decision is made following the consultation process.
“This means you’re still able to use Zipcars until 31st December 2025.
“If you would like to see what other car sharing options there are in your area, please visit the national charity for shared transport, CoMoUK’s website.”
Zipcar also directed any questions to its any questions Help Centre.
In the UK, some vehicles are branded “Zipcar Flex” – which means that they can be left anywhere within a designated zone instead of a specific parking space.
The firm, known for offering by-the-hour rentals alongside longer lets, has some 650,000 customers across the country.
