Approx 41,500 to receive Xmas bonus in region

The Department of Social Protection has announced details of Christmas Bonus payments.

The bonus will be paid to 1.5 million pensioners, carers, and people with disabilities.

Payments totalling €370 million will be issued from today, with people receiving their Christmas Bonus on the same day that they usually receive their primary payment.

In Monaghan, approximately 18,600 people will receive payments, while in Cavan, 22,900 people will receive the Christmas Bonus payment.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Monaghan Senator Gallagher welcomed the news.

He said that people are feeling the cost of living increases, and that the payment is needed.

Senator Gallagher said: “There is no doubt that people are feeling the cost of living increases.

“People can see that everyday when they go and buy their groceries. This is very much needed, and welcomed.

“The message I would send out to people, is to try and think about shopping local. Those are the businesses that employ local people,” he added.

Meanwhile, Cavan-Monaghan TD, Brendan Smith also welcomed the news.

He said: “I welcome this announcement by the Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary TD that the Christmas Bonus will be paid this week to pensioners, carers and people with disabilities.

“This is an essential payment for many families in view of the ongoing cost of living pressures and the considerable costs that arise for households in the lead into Christmas,” Deputy Smith added.
