Cal Foote signs AHL deal with Chicago Wolves

Another member of a scandal has signed a pro contract.

On Monday, the Chicago Wolves, American Hockey League affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced that the team has signed defenseman Cal Foote to a minor-league deal for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

Foote was one of the five members of the 2018 Canadian National Junior Team who were charged with sexual assault in reference to an incident in London, Ont. a few months after the team won the gold medal at that year’s IIHF World Junior Championship.

Foote, along with Dillon Dubé, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, and Michael McLeod, was found not guilty. So far, Hart is the only player who has signed with an NHL team since the league lifted the players’ ban this past October, signing a two-year contract with the Golden Knights.

None of the five were eligible to return to NHL action until Monday. While McLeod and Formenton signed contracts to play in Europe, Foote joins Hart as the only ones to have signed in North America.

Prior to the trials, Foote spent time with HK 32 Liptovsky Mikulas in the Slovak Extraliga during the 2024-25 season. He scored three goals and 27 assists for 30 points before departing the team.

The former first-round pick spent parts of six seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization, playing with both Tampa and its primary affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. After being traded to the Nashville Predators during the 2022-23 season, Foote’s last season in North America came the following year, playing just four games with the New Jersey Devils, spending most of the campaign with the AHL’s Utica Comets.

Foote has appeared in 158 NHL games, both regular-season and playoffs, scoring five goals and 17 assists for 22 points. In 190 AHL games, the Englewood, Colo. native has posted 21 goals and 54 assists for 75 points.

The Wolves (9-6-3-1) sit fourth in the AHL’s Central Division. They are set to host the Manitoba Moose on Wednesday night.
