The Mummy 4: After Alien: Earth, Noah Hawley Can Be the James Gunn of Universal’s Dark Universe Revival

The Mummy 4 is in full swing with the OG stars reprising their roles after seventeen long years. Variety confirmed earlier this month that Universal is developing a fourth Mummy to be headlined by Brendan Fraser alongside directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

After a failed Dark Universe attempt by Universal with their 2017 The Mummy flick starring Tom Cruise, the opportunity for the studio to expand beyond what we’ve seen from the monsters in the original Mummy movies is endless, and I can think of one person who can do a great job: Alien: Earth creator, Noah Hawley.

Noah Hawley has the potential to create his own universe, the way James Gunn is accomplishing with the DCU. A Dark Universe franchise opens the opportunity to create a solid, well-made horror franchise that The Conjuring is struggling to fill.

Noah Hawley has been on an endless hot streak for over a decade now, with hit franchises like Fargo and Yellowstone. The creator-writer is skilled at worldbuilding and creating extremely memorable characters, especially in FX’s Fargo with its anthology of star hits.

The creator is no stranger to working with big stars, and the same can easily be done with The Dark Universe. Alien: Earth is the best example of him taking an established franchise and treating the material with his golden touch.

Despite having megastars like Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, the Mission Impossible star turned what could’ve been a horror masterpiece into another action-driven film. Eastern Mirror reports that Brendan Fraser attributes the film’s failure to the lack of adventure and excitement that his films had.

Fraser also said it is important “to give everybody what they really, really want,” and I couldn’t agree more. The OG Mummy movies had a lot of heart and, importantly, a well-crafted adventure for fans of all ages.

Speaking to AP News, Brendan Fraser said this Mummy 4 film is the one he wanted to make, stating:

…the one I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.

Along with Fraser, his love interest in the film, Rachel Weisz, is also set to reprise her role, according to Variety. Fraser has been talking about reprising his role forever, mentioning his interest once again after he won the Oscar for his role in The Whale.

Here are key details about the Mummy franchise.

The fans have been waiting, and it looks like they’ll have to wait a bit longer, but seventeen years appear small in the grand scheme of things. If Noah Hawley gets on board, we know that his Alien: Earth horror experience will definitely come in handy.

The Mummy 4 has no release date yet.

Alien: Earth is currently streaming on Hulu in the U.S.
