Season series: Detroit leads 1-0

Atlanta escaped with a 142-134 OT win over the Philadelphia 76ers Sunday while covering as a 3-point road underdog as the Over (232.5) was smashed. F Jalen Johnson scored 41 points and had 14 rebounds, and G Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 34 points in the win. The Hawks outrebounded Philly by 58-46.

Detroit narrowly picked up a 138-135 win over the Miami Heat Saturday to cover as a 4-point road underdog as the Over (240) cashed. G Cade Cunningham and F Tobias Harris combined for 55 points to lead the Pistons, and G/F Duncan Robinson impressed with 18 points in his return to Miami. The Pistons outscored Miami 76-54 in the paint.

Hawks at Pistons picks and predictions

Prediction

Pistons 124, Hawks 121

PASS.

The Pistons will win this game and cover as -400 favorites, but no team favored so heavily is ever worth the risk of betting on, so pass here and bet on the spread and/or total instead.

LEAN HAWKS +9.5 (-115).

With the way Johnson and Alexander-Walker have been playing, I’m not sure anyone can slow them down right now, and they can keep the Hawks in any game. The Pistons will shut down the paint in the half-court, but look for the Hawks to have a lot of success generating turnovers and turning those turnovers into easy points here.

This is a lean because the Pistons are 3-1 ATS in the last 4 matchups between these squads.

BET OVER 233.5 (-110).

The Over has hit in each of Atlanta’s last 3 games and is 8-2 in the Hawks’ last 10. For Detroit, the Over is 7-3 in its last 10 outings. The Over has also hit in the last 3 matchups between these squads and is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings.

With both teams being top 5 in turnovers forced per game and top 10 in transition points per game, look for this to be a fast-paced and high-scoring affair.

Detroit’s defense is great, but look for this to be an offensive game in which a few guys put up monster scoring numbers en route to the Over cashing here.
