Winter storm watch issued for Tuesday snow in Maine

Southern Maine will likely get between 6-10 inches of snow on Tuesday.

Anticipating Maine’s first significant snow fall this winter, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Tuesday morning through late Tuesday night in south central, southwest, and western Maine.

Snow will begin to fall on Tuesday morning in southern Maine, around the time of the morning commute, said meteorologist Derek Schroeder of the National Weather Service in Gray.

“So our first key message there is usually it’s with that first inch or so of snow accumulating on the road, that’s when we tend to see a higher amount of accidents,” said Schroeder.

The snow is forecasted to move northward on Tuesday morning and continue falling through the evening. North of the mountains, Mainers could see between 3-5 inches of snow.

Snowfall rates in southern Maine could reach an inch of snow per hour and bring visibility down as low as a quarter mile, said Schroeder.

“It looks like driving Tuesday afternoon into the Tuesday evening commute is going to be the brunt of the storm. Travel is going to be quite difficult,” said Schroeder.

Schroeder said the cold weather pattern is expected to continue later into the week. Snow showers are possible on Thursday evening and the weekend, though as of Sunday it is too far out to forecast how much might fall beyond Tuesday.
