After record lake effect snow, Upstate NY could get more snow from coastal storm

Syracuse, N.Y. — Just a few days after seeing record-breaking snowfall, Upstate New York is expected to get another round of snow on Tuesday.

The snowfall from Tuesday’s storm will be lighter but more widespread than what fell in the lake effect storm on Thursday and Friday.

Syracuse is likely to get 2 to 5 inches through Tuesday evening, according to National Weather Service forecasts. Higher elevations, including the Tug Hill plateau and the Catskills, could see 6 to 12 inches.

The snow is likely to start tonight in the western portion of the state, then spread east and north through the morning. The heaviest snow is expected from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., potentially snarling the drive to work on Tuesday.

“Snow comes to an end from west to east Tuesday afternoon and evening,” the weather service said. “The rest of the week will remain cold, with off and on snow chances.”

The lake effect snowstorm that hit Thursday and Friday dropped as much as 18 inches in parts of Upstate New York.

Syracuse got 10.3 inches of snow on Friday, breaking the record for Nov. 29. The previous record for that date was 8.8 inches, set in 1958.

In total, Syracuse got 13.1 inches from the three-day storm.

Most of Upstate New York will be under winter storm alerts from late tonight through Tuesday evening. Purple indicates a winter weather advisory, with snowfall between 3 and 7 inches. Green denotes a more severe winter storm watch, for 7 inches or more of snow.National Weather Service
