MANSFIELD — A 9-year-old boy was one of two people killed in a Saturday afternoon shooting in the city, according to Mansfield Police.

A 40-year-old man, the father of the child, was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, his son was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.

According to Mansfield Police Chief Jason Bammann, authorities are investigating the possibility of a murder-suicide scenario.

Police responded to a call at 12:06 p.m. at 927 Woodville Road on the report of two individuals with gunshot wounds inside the residence.

“While the circumstances appear to be a murder-suicide, detectives from the Mansfield Division of Police, along with the Richland County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate,” Bammann said in a press release.

“Out of respect for the family, the names of the individuals are not being released at this time.”

Bammann said additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
