Look Back Manga Gets Live-Action Film from Award-Winning Director Hirokazu Kore-eda

A live-action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto‘s Look Back manga is on the way, according to manga editor Shinhei Rin (Spy x Family, Chainsaw Man). Its director is Hirokazu Kore-eda, who helmed Palme d’Or winner Shoplifters and received the Asian Film Awards’ Best Director award two years in a row for Broker and Monster.
Some Japanese media report the movie will premiere in 2026. Uncovered visuals (we’ll include them when they are officially revealed) link the production to K2 Pictures, which was founded in 2023 and announced a 500 million yen investment from the Development Bank of Japan via its K2P Film Fund I on November 28, 2025.

Look Back is a Shueisha-published one-shot that was released in July 2021 and is also available in English via Manga Plus and VIZ Media. The story follows two classmates who develop a friendship through a passion for drawing.
An anime movie adaptation directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Flip Flappers director, Chainsaw Man devil designer) at his Studio Durian was released in 2024 and won the Best Animated Work award at the 48th Japan Academy Film Prize. An exhibition will be held at Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills Gallery next year from January 16 to March 29.
