Pokémon Legends: Z-A reveals first Mega Z variant

Most Pokémon don’t get a Mega evolution, the menacing temporary power-ups introduced in Pokémon X and Y. Even more exclusive is the list of Pokémon who get two or three Mega evolutions, like Raichu or Mewtwo. With Pokémon Legends: Z-A‘s Mega Dimension DLC, Lucario is now joining that special club. But unlike other monsters with Mega X and Y variants, Lucario is the only Mega Z evolution in the entire compendium. Given how popular Lucario is with the fandom, a Mega variant almost feels overdue for the canine fighter. By that measure, it’s fitting that he’s getting a unique Mega variant, though.
Mega Lucario Z appears to be influenced by Anubis, the Egyptian god of the underworld. The new design loses Lucario’s signature chest spike in favor of a sleeker profile with a baby blue overtone decked out with a light brown fur overcoat. Most of the YouTube comments can’t help but compare Lucario Z to Hatsune Miku, which, sure, why not. The trailer sees Mega Lucario Z fighting against the stock Mega Lucario, who he overpowers handily. According to Game Freak, Z evolutions can attack more quickly but also burn through their power-up faster than other creatures do. Fun fact: Like the original Mega Lucario, the new version is also a fighting/steel type monster.
Here’s the official description:
It can utilize its aura in a variety of ways, including stretching it into a shield or channeling it into physical blows by concentrating it into specific parts of its body, such as its legs or fists. Like Mega Lucario, Mega Lucario Z is a Fighting- and Steel-type Pokémon.
Mega Lucario Z will be a part of the Mega Dimension DLC, which introduces a swath of new Pokémon alongside a staggering new limit that might allow monsters to reach level 200. In it, players explore a new area through the use of donuts that level up their monsters — but only for a limited time. Mega Dimension almost comes across like Pokémon’s take on the roguelike genre, in that players will have to strategize around runs with limited resources. It also seems like Mega Dimension might be the toughest challenge Pokémon has ever thrown at players.
If you haven’t beaten Pokémon Legends: Z-A yet, Mega Lucario Z might be your sign to do so: Mega Dimensions comes out on Dec. 10. If you need some help getting there, it might not be a bad idea to pick up the free Mega Diancie stone Game Freak is giving out. Not only is it the return of a somewhat MIA monster, a mythical never hurts to have on the roster. Or perhaps you might be interested in the new free Mega Mewtwo?
