‘You lived every minute of his pain’ Jamie Gill’s brother pays tribute to Niamh Cullen at funeral

Niamh Cullen laid her beloved husband, Jamie Gill, to rest on Tuesday after his tragic passing on November 27.

Jamie, 33, passed away at the end of last month in St Francis Hospice, Raheny, after a heroic battle with cancer, leaving Niamh ‘broken’.

The late Dublin man’s father and brother eulogised him at his funeral on December 2, paying special tribute to Jamie’s beloved wife, Niamh, who went above and beyond over the past 13 months to care for him.

Hugh Snr and Jnr were met with a thunderous round of applause as they stepped up to the altar to say a few words, thanking the hospital and hospice team for their warmth and kindness.

Hugh Jnr described his younger brother, Jamie, as ‘a true one in a million, who would walk into any space and people would notice.

He added: ‘He’d light up a room like no other,’ saying Jamie boasted ‘kindness, charm, and good looks’, and that he had a ‘happy and loveable nature’.

‘Jamie had an innocence and grá for life,’ Hugh Jnr continued. ‘He had a habit of making you walk away with your cup half full.’

Turning his attention to his sister-in-law, Niamh, he gushed: ‘He knew Niamh was the one from the get-go. Choking up, he continued: ‘You were his jewel, Niamh, and he couldn’t be prouder.’

‘”That’s my Niamh,” he’d say. Jamie was the bravest person I’ve ever known… we used to look at him in awe of how he’d navigate life with ease, despite what was going on in the background.’

‘That boy beamed with pride as he said “I do”. Our brother’s greatest achievement was you, Niamh,’ Hugh Jnr said. ‘Niamh and mum, what you did for Jamie this year was nothing short of incredible. You lived every minute of his pain.’

Jamie’s beautiful goddaughter, Emily, was born on Friday, November 28, the day after he passed, and Hugh Jnr said, ‘she will keep his light shining.

‘Jamie, you lit up our world like no one else could…You really were our modern-day Superman,’ he concluded.
