Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire has agreed to a new contract that will run through the 2032 season and average at least $6.8 million per year, a Tech athletics spokesman said on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
The contract starts at $6.5 million for the 2026 season and increases by $100,000 per year, topping out at $7.1 million for the 2023 season. McGuire can also earn up to $1.2 million in bonuses each year.
The terms of the contract were agreed in principle. As of earlier Tuesday, the spokesman said, it was still awaiting signatures and approval by the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents.
To fire McGuire without cause, Tech would owe him 70% of the remaining value of the deal. That buyout increases to 80% of the remaining value should the Red Raiders win the Big 12 championship beginning with the 2026 season.
The money owed to McGuire under such a buyout would be offset by his future earnings within the term of the deal, and he would have a duty to seek other employment at a current market rate.
Should McGuire leave the university by his own choice, he would owe Texas Tech 50% of the remaining value of the deal to take a job at another Big 12 school or another program in the state of Texas or 40% of the remaining value to take any other football-related position.
McGuire is scheduled to make a little more than $4.55 million during the current contract year, according to the college head-coaches’ database maintained by USA TODAY Sports.
Texas Tech is 11-1 this season, 8-1 in the Big 12, and will play Brigham Young in the conference championship game on Saturday, Dec. 6, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
