Ana Ivanovic officially files for divorce from Bastian Schweinsteiger after nine years

Former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic has reportedly formally filed for divorce from her husband, former German footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger, after nine years of marriage. A few months ago, the legal representative of the 2008 French Open champion, Christian Schertz, had confirmed their separation due to ‘irreconcilable differences’.
The former couple—one of the high-profile marriages between two athletes—met in 2014 and married in Venice in 2016. Although the separation reportedly occurred in April, the ex-couple requested that their privacy be respected, especially concerning their three children, aged 7, 6, and 2, respectively.
Public appearances by both former athletes were constant throughout the years. Back in September 2024, they attended the Laver Cup in Berlin together, and their last couple’s post on Instagram was from a Christmas market last year.
According to Bild, Ivanovic officially filed for divorce in November at the Munich District Court. The former tennis player also reportedly filed for child support in Palma de Mallorca in Spain. The same German media outlet linked Schweinsteiger—a 2014 World Cup champion—with a Bulgarian woman identified as ‘Silvia,’ with whom he allegedly has been in a relationship since the summer of 2024.
Ivanovic’s Career: From teen finalist to Grand Slam champion
Ana Ivanovic had a notable career from an early age. By 2007, she reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros at just 19 years old—already with two WTA 1000 titles to her name. Ivanovic was ultimately defeated in her first Major final by the Belgian, four-time French Open champion, Justine Henin.
This was only the beginning of what was to come. In 2008, she reached her second Major final at the Australian Open and was again defeated—this time by Maria Sharapova. However, her revenge came at Roland Garros that same year, where she defeated rivals like Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Janković on her way to the final, where she overcame Dinara Safina in straight sets.
Ivanovic claimed the world No. 1 ranking shortly after at age 21, but a progressive decline in her level began in the following years. Nevertheless, the Serbian won a total of 15 titles throughout her career—including one Grand Slam, three WTA 1000 events, and two WTA Tournament of Champions (the former year-end tournament played parallel to the WTA Finals, gathering the best players who had not qualified for the Finals).
Ivanovic ended her career with a record of 480-225 and over $15 million in earnings. After her retirement in 2016, she married former footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger, beginning a new chapter in her life as a mother of three.
Despite her retirement, Ivanovic has made some brief returns to the courts. A year ago, she participated in the Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters, an eight-woman invitational tournament that brings together female tennis legends, where Ivanovic was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Kirsten Flipkens, the eventual champion of the tournament.
