Lady A Brings Holiday Magic With New Album On This Winter’s Night (Volume 2)

Lady A are officially in the holiday spirit — and they’re inviting fans to celebrate with them. The Grammy-winning trio just released On This Winter’s Night (Volume 2), their first new Christmas album in more than a decade, and it arrives perfectly timed with their inaugural holiday tour.

For Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood, revisiting the world of sleigh bells and candlelight felt both nostalgic and necessary. “I think one of the main reasons we wanted to make a volume two of this record is because we knew we wanted to put on a Christmas tour for the first time,” Kelley explains. “It had been a little over a decade since we made our first Christmas record, and I think one of the biggest compliments we get every year is people telling us how these Christmas songs and our Christmas record is a part of their tradition every year — to put on whether decorating the tree or whatever it may be. With a growing family of nine kids between the three of us, Christmas only gets sweeter and more special.”

The collection blends classics the band didn’t get to record the first time around with new originals that honor the true heart of the holiday. “There were a lot of songs we wanted to get to that we didn’t for the first volume 13 years ago,” says Haywood. “A lot of life has happened in those last 13 years … we got to add some that we didn’t get to, like ‘Oh Holy Night,’ which was at the top of the list. And taking a different spin on some classics, like ‘Last Christmas’ and ‘Wonderful Christmastime.’”

The band also leaned into songwriting with meaning and longevity. “We tried to tackle writing Christmas songs that will hopefully be around for a while,” Haywood adds. “‘Wouldn’t It Be Christmas’ was a really fun one we wrote with Sam Ellis. And I’m really proud of the original ‘Why We Sing Noel,’ which really carves out the story of Christmas. We opened up the Bible and walked through, making sure we told that story around the meaning of Christmas. This project checks a lot of boxes for us.”

As they embrace a season filled with new music, cherished traditions and the joyful chaos of raising nine children between them, the members of Lady A say it’s the simple comforts that make the holidays shine. And when Christmas finally arrives, they each have a few non-negotiables that make the celebration complete.
