N.J. school closings, delayed openings due to snow, ice for Tuesday (Dec. 2, 2025)

New Jersey school districts have called for closures and delayed openings Tuesday due to a storm that could drop a mix of snow, sleet and ice on parts of the state during the morning commute.

The highest snowfall totals of 4 inches are expected in Sussex County with decreasing amounts in surrounding areas. A light glaze of ice is also possible, according to the National Weather Service.

A state of emergency takes effect at 5 a.m. for Hunterdon, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren Counties. Those counties are under winter weather advisories.

“This will be the first snowfall of the season, which is expected to occur during the Tuesday morning rush hour commute,” the National Weather Service said. “Impacts may be more significant than usual, even if observed snowfall amounts end up closer to the 1-2 inch range.”

Precipitation began around daybreak Tuesday and could make for a messy morning commute.
