Kuldeep Yadav took the prized wicket of Dewald Brevis at a crucial juncture in the second ODI between India and South Africa in Raipur on Wednesday, December 3. The left-arm wrist-spinner removed dangerous-looking Brevis for 54 off 34 balls immediately after being smashed for a six off the previous delivery. With the scalp, he also broke the 92-run fourth-wicket partnership between him and Matthew Breetzke.
The dismissal came in the 41st over of the Proteas’ run chase. Kuldeep bowled a tossed-up delivery around middle and leg stump line, and Brevis went for consecutive sixes, but the ball got more height than distance. Yashasvi Jaiswal settled underneath the ball at long-on to pouch it safely. Brevis failed to take his foot off the accelerator despite four sixes in his attacking knock.

“He struggles to get out of that 5th gear” – When AB de Villiers pointed out the flaw in Dewald Brevis’ batting style
Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers pointed out a major flaw in Dewald Brevis’s batting style. The cricketer-turned-analyst urged him to mix aggression with caution. He said during the ODI series between Australia and South Africa in August 2025 (via Sportskeeda):
“Brevis, I mean, when he gets going, it is just wonderful to watch. He strikes fear into all bowling attacks, and that’s the kind of player you want in your team, but that is also an area of concern for me where he struggles to sort of get out of that fifth gear back to third and fourth, just to sort of learn to control the game better. I think it’s going to be very important for him moving forward.”
“Understanding the change of gears and when to take the foot off the pedal a little bit. But obviously, a natural ball striker. He strikes fear into all bowling attacks, and that’s the kind of player you want in your team,” De Villiers added.
In the second ODI, India posted 358/5 after being asked to bat first. Virat Kohli (102) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (105) slammed individual centuries.
At the time of writing, the Proteas were 311/4 after 43 overs, with Breetzke (63 off 60) and Tony de Zorzi (13 off 8) at the crease. They are 0-1 behind in the three-match series, losing the opening game by 17 runs in Ranchi.
The third and final ODI between the two teams will be played in Vizag on Saturday, December 6.
