Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin lauded South African batter Dewald Brevis’ whirlwind innings against India at Raipur on Wednesday.
The Protea star’s 54-run knock off 34 deliveries set the touring South African side up for a promising finish to the second game in the five-match ODI series.
“Brev-ball is box office,” Ashwin posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
South Africa won the toss and chose to field first. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings for India. However, Sharma was dismissed by Nandre Burger for 14 off 8 balls. Jaiswal added 22 runs before being sent back by Marco Jansen. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Virat Kohli then steadied the Indian innings.
Gaikwad went on to score a magnificent century, reaching 105 off 83 balls before being dismissed by Jansen. Kohli continued to build his innings and achieved his 53rd ODI century, with KL Rahul providing support.
Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar was run out by Corbin Bosch for just 1 run off 8 deliveries.
Rahul scored a half-century, while Ravindra Jadeja contributed significantly towards the end, helping India’s total surpass the 300-run mark.
The Proteas began their chase with the opening duo of Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock, but they could only add 26 runs before de Kock was scalped by Indian seamer Arshdeep Singh.
South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma and Markram steadied the Proteas’ chase and kept the scoreboard ticking as the visitors breached the triple-digit mark with Markram scoring a half-century. Bavuma was removed after adding 46 runs off 48 deliveries as Prasidh Krishna struck for the hosts.
Matthew Breetzke replaced his fallen skipper and accompanied Markram as the opener brought up a century before falling to Harshit Rana for 110 off just 98 balls.
Then came Brevis, who took the attack to the Indian bowling unit with five boundaries, including four sixes, to bring up his fifty, while Breetzke also held his own with a half-century.
