Son to return for Spurs farewell ahead of Champions League clash

Tottenham have confirmed that Son Heung-min will return to north London for a farewell ahead of their Champions League fixture with Slavia Prague.

Son played his final match for Spurs in a pre-season match in South Korea against Newcastle United before joining MLS side Los Angeles FC.

The 33-year-old scored 173 goals for Spurs, and is the club’s fifth all-time leading scorer, while also contributing to 198 goals in 333 Premier League matches (127 goals, 71 assists).

He also captained Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final last season.

The club announced that Son will take to the pitch before their match against Slavia Prague on December 9 and will address the home fans.

Son also released a statement that said: “When I announced my difficult decision to leave Spurs in the summer, it was in Korea and I never got a proper chance to say goodbye to fans at the stadium.

“Now I am so happy because I am going to come back to London on 9th December, for the Champions League match, and be able to tell the Spurs fans in person just how much their support and love over ten years has meant to me and my family.

“It will be emotional, but it’s important for me and the club that this happens.”

Son has scored 12 goals and provided three assists in 13 MLS appearances for LAFC, forming a strong partnership with Gabon’s Denis Bouanga.

The South Korea star also helped them reach the Western Conference semi-finals and scored a brace, including a 95th-minute equaliser from a free-kick in the tie, before missing a penalty in their shootout defeat to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
