On the heels of head coach Kalani Sitake signing a contract extension Tuesday, the BYU Cougars football program had a ton of momentum heading into the beginning of the early recruiting signing period Wednesday and officially inked most of its expected class in the morning.
However, the most marquee name of the class — elite California quarterback Ryder Lyons — will not sign Wednesday, 247 Sports’ Brandon Huffman reported.
Huffman reported that “It could also be likely that he waits until February to sign,” according to his sources.
Huffman observed that Lyons won’t be enrolling in school soon anyway, as he is set to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Florida.
While Huffman reported that indications are that Lyons will ultimately sign with BYU at some point, he did observe that “the delay could give other schools a chance to woo him.”
Huffman named Oregon, USC, LSU and Miami as schools that could keep pursuing Lyons.
Lyons, who played his prep football at Folsom High in California, is a consensus top five quarterback prospect in the country in the Class of 2026.
