As restoration work on the Tyne Bridge continues, a series of additional overnight closures are set to take place next week as a result of poor weather hitting the North East.
As heavy rain is expected to cause further travel disruption this weekend and snow warnings in place across parts of the region, weekday overnight closures are necessary for the installation of new scaffolding.
Additional closures of the Tyne Bridge have been announced by Newcastle City Council from Monday, December 1, to ensure teams can complete the scaffolded walkway on the east footway – a vital step before major repairs and repainting begin next year.
Construction on enclosed pedestrian tunnels built on the footways on either side of the bridge began earlier this year. Contractors were previously working behind the scaffolding on the west footway, on the bridge’s parapet and screen plates to allow people to cross safely while work is being carried out.
The work completed during next phase will mirror the west footway, and metal sheeting surround and artificial lighting will be installed for safety. When all of the works to the screen plates and parapets are completed, the scaffolding will then be removed to pave the way for the construction of the safety deck scaffolding above the bridge deck, when work will begin on the bridge arch.
When the Tyne Bridge will be closed:
Monday December 1: 10pm – 6am – Full Closure
Tuesday December 2: 11.30pm – 6am – Full Closure (delayed until 11:30pm to accommodate travelling football fans)
Wednesday December 3: 10pm – 6am – Full Closure
Thursday December 4: 10pm – 6am – Southbound Closure, Northbound open
Friday December 5: 10pm – 6am – Southbound Closure, Northbound open
